Chain stitch in two simple steps

The workshop I’m giving on handstitching, embroidery and the making of a felt clutch is drawing near! In anticipation, here’s sharing with you a quick tutorial on how to do a simple chain stitch.

Chain stitches are mighty useful ones – use them to create much fancier stitches than plain straight stitches, without much fuss! So here goes:

chain stitch tutorial

  1. Stick your needle upwards out of the fabric, hiding your knot underneath on the “ugly side”.
  2. Stick your needle in (close to where you came out earlier), and out again in the direction that your chain stitch is heading. Pull the needle out over the thread.
  3. Repeat and you’ll have a beautiful chain stitch!
